چکیده

In the Public Health White Paper “Healthy Lives, Healthy People” (2010), the UK Government emphasised using incentives and “nudging” to encourage positive, healthy behaviour changes. However, there is little evidence that nudging is effective, in particular for increasing physical activity. We have created a platform to research the effectiveness of health-related behaviour change interventions and incentive schemes. The system consists of an outward-facing website, incorporating tools for incentivizing behaviour change, and a novel physical activity monitoring system. The monitoring system consists of the “Physical Activity Loyalty Card”, which contains a passive RFID tag, and a contactless sensor network to detect the cards. This paper describes the application of this novel web-based system to investigate the effectiveness of non-cash incentives to “nudge” adults to undertake more physical activity.

A Novel Index for Online Voltage Stability Assessment Based on Correlation Characteristic of Voltage Profiles

Abstract: Voltage instability is a major threat for security of power systems. Preserving voltage security margin at a certain limit is a vital requirement for today’s power systems. Assessment of voltage security margin is a challenging task demanding sophisticated indices. In this paper, for the purpose of on line voltage security assessment a new index based on the correlation characteristic...

Incentives and rewards: what do adult populations truly want? Insights from the physical activity loyalty (PAL) scheme

Methods In the PAL Scheme, employees used a ‘loyalty card’ to monitor their physical activity over 12 weeks. The incentive group (n=199) collected points and received rewards for physical activity (1 minute = 1 point, max: 30 pts/day). A comparator group (n=207) self-monitored their physical activity only. Points could be redeemed as retail vouchers. 17 different incentives were available, from...

Application of Radial Basis Neural Networks in Fault Diagnosis of Synchronous Generator

This paper presents the application of radial basis neural networks to the development of a novel method for the condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of synchronous generators. In the proposed scheme, flux linkage analysis is used to reach a decision. Probabilistic neural network (PNN) and discrete wavelet transform (DWT) are used in design of fault diagnosis system. PNN as main part of thi...

Accelerating the Worldwide Adoption of Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Taxes: Strengthening Commitment and Capacity; Comment on “The Untapped Power of Soda Taxes: Incentivizing Consumers, Generating Revenue, and Altering Corporate Behavior”

In their recent article Roache and Gostin outline why governments and public health advocates should embrace soda taxes. The evidence is strong and continues to grow: such taxes can change consumer behavior, generate significant revenue and incentivize product reformulation. In essence, such taxes are an important and now well-established instrument of fiscal and public health policy. In this c...
